11 Best HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaners Tested by Experts 2024

When it comes to dust and debris, nobody is a fan. However, people with allergies or asthma have a much bigger problem with them.

Unfortunately, the process of vacuuming, if done with the wrong vacuum cleaner, will release back all the allergens. This will not only not solve any problems but can, in fact, make the allergy worse.

This is why the best vacuum cleaners come with HEPA filters that will not allow allergens to return to the air.

So, I recommend that you keep reading to find out not only all there is to know about this subject but also the 11 best HEPA filter vacuum cleaners available on the market in 2022.

What are HEPA Filters and How do They Work?

You’ve probably heard many times before the term “HEPA”, you know that it stands for a filter system that is good for your health, but you don’t actually know what it means. So it’s time for you to find out more.

HEPA Filter Vacuum

HEPA means ‘High-Efficiency Particulate Air’ and is a label applied to filters that can trap 99.97% of 0.3 microns particles.

Even though the HEPA test and certification process was first established in 1983, the development of HEPA filters first started in World War II.

During the Manhattan Project, the US created the first HEPA filter that was intended to capture radioactive scraps released while creating the atomic bomb.

The 0.3-micron size is referred to as the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Experts found out that these kinds of particles escape air filters.

Now, modern HEPA filters are made of interlaced glass threads that are bent and twisted in multiple directions to produce a threadlike maze. As particles cross this web, they are taken out of circulation in multiple ways so let’s take each one at a time to understand the process.

  • Sieving. The airstream carries a particle between the two fibers. Because the particle is bigger than the gap, it is trapped.
  • Direct Impaction. Big contaminants, like some dust types, mold, or pollen, move in a direct trail, hit a fiber, and, in the end, clinging to it.
  • Diffusion. Tiny, ultrafine particles travel more unevenly than bigger ones. This means that they are more inclined to hit and cling to fibers.
  • Interception. Airflow is sufficiently nimble to find a different route around fibers. However, due to inertia, particles remain on their track and adhere to the fibers’ sides.

(Best Upright)

Dyson Upright Ball Multi Floor 2

I think that one of the nasties parts of vacuum cleaning is actually the part in which you have to empty the dirt bin. If you feel the same way as me, I recommend you to read carefully this next review.

Due to its large cord (31 feet) and also its want, you can reach up to 40 feet, giving you the possibility to clean above and under your furniture.

6. Miele Complete C3 Calima Canister Vacuum Cleaner

(Best Canister)

Miele Complete C3 Calima

For example, the best one I was able to test is Miele’s Complete C3 Calima. This model comes with a turbo brush and an air-driven spinning roller brush that releases the dirt on the floor.

Due to this feature, it works amazingly on low-medium height carpets but also on all smooth flooring. Also, for the hard surfaces, this model comes with a parquet twister that provides a 180° rotation.

7. Dyson Cyclone V10 Motorhead Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

(Most Lightweight and Cordless)

Dyson Cyclone V10 Motorhead

If you think that only corded models come with HEPA filters, think again. So, if you want better portability and a cordless vacuum cleaner that also has the best filtration possible, you should check out the Dyson Cyclone V10.

This stick model can run up to 60 minutes when you use one of its non-motorized tools and up to 20 minutes in suction mode II. Also, it needs 3.5 hours to charge.

This probably doesn’t need to be mentioned, but I will say it nevertheless. This model is a very lightweight one, so you won’t have any issue to maneuver it.

Personal opinion:

I think that every person should have a stick vacuum cleaner in the house. If it’s also convertible into a handheld one, even better. And if it has HEPA filters, I don’t have to say more.

This is why this model from Dyson is on my list. Yes, you can find sticks with better batteries and at better prices, but then you will sacrifice the filters.

O won’t say other things about it, because in the end, each person chooses the features best for its needs. However, if you are interested in this model and want to see how to clean it, I recommend you to watch the next video:

10. Makita XCV11Z 18V Wet/ Dry Vacuum Cleaner

(Best Wet and Dry)

Makita XCV11Z 18V

Portability is a very important factor, for me at least. Because of this, I couldn’t let this presentation finish without adding a very portable model with HEPA filters.

11. Aerus Vacuum Cleaner

(Best Innovative Technology)

The vacuum cleaner produced by Aerus is a very sophisticated canister vacuum cleaner that stands out for multiple reasons. However, the most important factor that I want to mention is that it actually has not one but 2 HEPA filters.

It has an Automatic Operation Mode that will sense what type of cleaning you are doing, but also an alert system that will alert you when maintenance is required.

Another great advantage of this model is its quietness. You can use it without worrying about waking about a sleeping baby or upsetting the neighbors.

Pros

  • 2 HEPA filters;
  • Automatic Operation Mode;
  • Not noisy;
  • 360° rotating hose;
  • Ergonomic design.

Cons

  • Expensive.

Personal Opinion:

I must confess that I didn’t expect that this vacuum cleaner would impress me this much. However, it is the perfect mix between a smart robot vacuum cleaner and a conventional one. Yes, it doesn’t come cheap, but since it is an innovative model, I suggest to consider it.

Are all HEPA Filters Identical?

You probably guessed the answer to this, but no, not all HEPA filters have the same properties. When looking at multiple filters you will see important differences in both composition and utilization.

Some use an ionizer that is the first barrier that meets the air that gives a negative electrostatic charge to the incoming particles and then captures them.

Others work in a different way and simply reduce the contaminants, therefore prevent allergen development and the additional growth of bacteria or viruses on the filter.

The good thing about HEPA technology is that regardless of its method of purifying the air, you know precisely what to expect.

How to Be Sure That Your Hepa Is Not Just Fake Advertising?

Just as in all domains, there will be a lot of scammers that will want to sell you fake HEPA filters. Therefore you will need to know how to recognize a true one.

The first thing you need to do is to check if the filter has a serial number printed on it. If it doesn’t have one, then it is definitely a false filter.

Also, it is very important to clarify this. A HEPA vacuum is produced for an appropriate HEPA performance and can be both a bagged or bagless model.

This means that it is not the bag type that makes a vacuum HEPA or not. Furthermore, using a HEPA vacuum bag or a HEPA filter in your non-HEPA vacuum cleaner will not convert it into a HEPA model, therefore you won’t get the wanted outcomes.

HEPA vacuum cleaners are sealed and also have specialized filters that clean all of the air that goes out of the vacuum, while standard ones normally filter the air through the vacuum bag.

Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaner

Now that you know all the important aspects related to the HEPA filters and also have seen what are the best models of HEPA vacuum cleaners available on the market in 2022, it is time to make a decision and pick the very best product for you and your needs.

But how can you do that? You need to put down on paper the points that are the most relevant to you. If you don’t know how to do it, follow the buyer’s guide below where I will teach you how to pick the ultimate vacuum cleaner for your house.

HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaner

Vacuum Cleaner Type

As you could already see HEPA filters are available on all types of vacuum cleaners so let’s make a recap.

Upright Models

Upright vacuum cleaners are probably the most common ones when talking about devices that come with HEPA filters. They work great for carpets that need deep cleaning and have a good reach under the furniture.

Not all upright vacuum cleaners are made the same. Some are more powerful than others because they have a dual motor. So if you want an upright vacuum cleaner, be sure that you pick the right one for your needs. Do you want it for heavy vacuuming or for everyday cleaning?

Canister Models

The next very popular model is the canister one. They are more compact and easy to use for stair areas and upholstery. They usually are more lightweight than the upright models even though they tend to be more powerful and offer more suction.

However, in the end, is just a matter of taste.

Commercial Models

Commercial vacuum cleaners can be both upright and canister models, but what makes them special is their very high power and suction.

They are heavier and less easy to use, but they are designed for heavy-duty jobs, therefore are not for everyday use. Except for the cases in you use one as an everyday job.

Robots

Now, it is actually very easy to buy a robotic vacuum cleaner, therefore you can find a HEPA one just as easily. So if you want a device that will do most of the cleaning for you, then you should consider buying a smart vacuum cleaner.

Keep in mind that a robot will only do the everyday cleaning for you and the heavy vacuuming will still be part of your routine.

Sticks and Handhelds Models

These are the most lightweight and smallest types of vacuum cleaners that you can buy. Most of the time they come cordless and in 2-in-1 models.

They are great for upholstery and hard-to-reach areas but keep in mind that they are for everyday cleaning.

Bagged or Bagless Models

Just as in the case of upright versus canister, choosing between a bagged and a bagless model is also in and a thing of personal taste.

Both kinds of models have pluses and minuses, such as extra power when it comes to the bagged ones and more environmentally friendly features when it comes to the bagless ones.

Since you can find both versions when searching for HEPA vacuum cleaners, you won’t have a hard time to satisfy your needs.

Weight

I think that weight is a very important factor when picking up a vacuum cleaner. Of course, usually, the most lightweight ones tend to be less powerful.

However, you can find models that are not heavy and offer powerful suction.

Noise

All vacuum cleaners make noise, but some more than others. So, if you live in a small apartment or have a baby that needs to sleep while you clean, you will want a silent version.

This means that you should look for models that are in the 60-65 dB range.

As a piece of advice, look into the canister models because they tend to be less noisy than the upright ones.

Pets

If you have a pet living with you, you should buy a vacuum cleaner that has the capacity to remove its hair from your carpets. There are actually specialized models for this purpose, so you should start from there.

If you can’t decide on a model that is recommended for pet hair, you should pick a vacuum cleaner that has a power of at least 12 Amps.

Power

Speaking of power, depending on your cleaning needs you should pick a model that has the right amount of power.

Keep in mind that the more powerful the vacuum cleaner is, the more electricity it requires, hence the bigger the bills.

So if you live in a clean area with little traffic, you should not invest in a very powerful model. However, if you live in a flat near a very trafficked road, you will most likely need a vacuum cleaner with great suction.

Brand

I know that this sounds silly, but we all tend to be biased and have preferences. So if you have a favorite brand such as Shark, Eureka, Miele, or Bissel, check them first to see if they have HEPA filter models and start reading their specifications to see if either of them fits your needs.

No, you can buy any kind of model you want. If it has HEPA filters it is just as efficient regardless of the model.

And my favorite HEPA filter vacuum cleaner is the Soniclean Soft Carpet Upright Vacuum Cleaner because it is allergy-friendly. Moreover, this product can deeply remove the embedded dirt out of the carpet pile.

    1. Hello Angela,

First of all thanks for contacting me. Usually, HEPA filters can be washed with cold water, but I strongly suggest you read the specifications before you do anything about it.

On the other note, all HEPA filters are the same. This is why they receive this name. They need to be capable of capturing up to 99.97 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns. A filter which is not capable of doing that, is not a HEPA filter.

Hope this help! But please, if you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to contact me again.

      Best regards,
      Kevin

  1. I’m curious as to why the Aerus vacuum cleaners were not included in your list. They come with high quality HEPA filters.

    1. Dear Lori,

First of all thanks for contacting me. I am really happy when the readers have this kind of contribution.

The reason why this model was not in the list was because it is a quite exclusivist vacuum cleaner. That was a mistake I am willing to take. However, I have added now. Hope that you can agree with the review. If you want to add anything about this device or any other, please feel free to write to me again.

      Kind regards,

      Kevin
